Testing Hijri-Gregorian Calendar

Assalamu-alaikum and greetings:

We have just written a new code that implements a Hijri-Gregorian Calendar. Our previous implementation was based on grabbing calendar from islamicfinder.org. The latter is still viewable at our portuguese sister site at www.myciw.org.

We have now written php code that implements calendar on a local server. It can be viewed at the this portal's homepage.

If you notice anything odd happening, or data to be incorrect, please inform us.

We hope to publish this code at a later stage insha-Allah as a free GPL license once we have made the code more efficient and readable.

Apart from islamicfinder.org as far as we know there's no such a calendar implmentation and islamicfinder.org hasn't published the source code.

We hope to publish the source code of our calendar through GPL license.

Ma'a-salaama,

Assalamu-alaikum and greetings:

We have made the code even more efficient taking even less processing time. The change is subtle and it's not noticed easily.

We thought of reporting the modificiations of the code in case anything odd is noticed by the members.

Ma'a-salaama,

Assalamu-alaikum and greetings:

In case anyone has noted this morning (October 1st) our calendar block in portal's main page had a bug. Soon after Sha'ban 30th, there was Ramadhan 2nd, jumping altogether Ramadhan 1st. This was a bug something we overlooked when coding, i.e. programming. Now we have a conditional test that verifies if after 30th the next day is day 2, and if it is, rectifies the situation.

As our Muslim members know an Islamic month cannot have more than 30 days. So it's feasable that a month may have 30 days. The code didn't test if next is day 2. Now it does.

We haven't made this code public because we are still testing it, and hopefully we may improve it.

We are now in collaboration with a brother from New York who's been doing work with Islamic date conversions.

Apart from us, myiwc.com team, only islamicfinder.org has a Hijri-Gregorian calendar. Insha-Allah we'll make public the code once it's well tested. islamicfinder's code isn't public.

Members are requested to be on lookout for errors in the calendar. If you notice any please notify us here or by PM'ing us.

Ma'a-salaama,

Assalaamu alaikum.

Good work, br.

But...respectfully speaking, I think that other sites do have calendar converters.

I mean...doing a google (or any other) search by typing in keywords: 'calendar converter' will give u some results.

One of the sites I found thru such a search was: http://www.fourmilab.ch/documents/calendar/

Pretty neat result, this last one...has lots of different calendars all listed in the same converter.

Also, some international airlines also provide calendar converters. (such as the arab airlines, for example).

Try it...sure that u would find some other converters available out there.

Wa-alaikum-as-salaam sr:

We are not reinventing the wheel sr. There are date converters and we use some of the ideas. In fact we designed a date converter module that's being used by many phpnuke portals. A date converter isn't the same thing as a calendar. They are in fact different things. First and foremost date converters take into consideration that gregorian dates are from 15th century onwards.

The problem in establishing a calendar is a lot different. Leap years have to be taken into account and a complete calendar must be generated that includes hijri and gregorian dates. The other situation is that the gregorian calendar is the basis. Now within the gregorian month of say October fall two hijri months. So as you see lots more is envolved and that including web rendering.

We are actually quite humble alhamdulillah. We have never written any code that may include something written by someone else, even a non-Muslim, without acknowledging that source. Just because there are out there generous people that distribute their intelectual property for free we have no right to say it's now ours. The moral of story is that alhamdulillah myiwc.com's team has been quite strict in respecting intelectual property.

Now coming back on calendar, only www.islamicfinder.com had a hijri-gregorian calendar and they allow anyone to grab it into one's page. You may see it working at our sister site www.myciw.org. We wrote a phpnuke block for that calendar. The disadvantage of that calendar is that it depends on the islamicfinder.com site. If the site is down the calendar won't display.

What we have done is to write new code, with some snipets from other sorces (we acknowledge them as I said and seek due authorization from them if required). We hope to launch the calendar code to public domain, once it is well tested, or at least is tested to the best of capabilities insha-Allah.

Ma'a-salaama,

Assalaamu alaikum.

Well, bro...thanku for the detailed explanation, and differentiation between a calendar and simple date converter.

Anyways, I have always been amazed at the wonderful work u and ur team are doing with the progression of this site. MashaAllah. May Allah reward you greatly for your diligent work.

And may He strengthen you to further work towards His cause of spreading Islam and helping others.

and greetings:

As from today December 9, 2005, we are testing a more fine-tuned code in php in our main page for Hijri-Gregorian calendar, using for example functions.

Please give us feedback if you notice anything odd, or wrong, going on with the calendar.

We hope that we are almost at final stages to release the block for phpnuke for public domain insha-Allah.

Ma'a-salaama,
