We are not reinventing the wheel sr. There are date converters and we use some of the ideas. In fact we designed a date converter module that's being used by many phpnuke portals. A date converter isn't the same thing as a calendar. They are in fact different things. First and foremost date converters take into consideration that gregorian dates are from 15th century onwards.
The problem in establishing a calendar is a lot different. Leap years have to be taken into account and a complete calendar must be generated that includes hijri and gregorian dates. The other situation is that the gregorian calendar is the basis. Now within the gregorian month of say October fall two hijri months. So as you see lots more is envolved and that including web rendering.
We are actually quite humble alhamdulillah. We have never written any code that may include something written by someone else, even a non-Muslim, without acknowledging that source. Just because there are out there generous people that distribute their intelectual property for free we have no right to say it's now ours. The moral of story is that alhamdulillah myiwc.com's team has been quite strict in respecting intelectual property.
Now coming back on calendar, only www.islamicfinder.com
had a hijri-gregorian calendar and they allow anyone to grab it into one's page. You may see it working at our sister site www.myciw.org
. We wrote a phpnuke block for that calendar. The disadvantage of that calendar is that it depends on the islamicfinder.com site. If the site is down the calendar won't display.
What we have done is to write new code, with some snipets from other sorces (we acknowledge them as I said and seek due authorization from them if required). We hope to launch the calendar code to public domain, once it is well tested, or at least is tested to the best of capabilities insha-Allah.
